The creators of Smallville, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have reportedly announced their departure from the show having cited that it is "time to move on."  The two haven't written episodes of the show for some time, but have overseen the show as producers. The executive producers Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson will be running the show after Gough and Millar leave. What this means for the future of the show and its consistency remains to be seen. There is speculation that this could mean that Smallville could be coming to its peak.
